The vision for this 120’ terrace on the upper west side was to break up the long narrow space while creating visual and functional connections to the adjacent interior rooms. The space was visually divided by the placement of the planting containers and the large Chamaecyparis shrubs and Stewartia trees that help to define each area. The Terrace consists of a cozy sitting garden off the master bedroom that is overflowing with flowering perennials such as Echinacea, Lavender and Guillardia. A breakfast garden outside a large picturesque window of the kitchen that includes heirloom tomatoes, assorted herbs, and flowering perennials. A viewing garden off the formal dining room to approach the terrace railing and enjoy the unobstructed skyline views. Finally, a sitting area adjacent to the formal living room to draw you out to the views of the Hudson River and the Northeastern Skyline.
A design concept for a brownstone in the Lenox Hill. The design creates three defined spaces for the client to entertain, enjoy a meal, or relax with a book overlooking the garden. The subtle change in elevation between each area helps to define the individual spaces and creates the feeling that the garden is much larger than it truly is. With a good amount of sun in this landscape, the plant material will range from full sun flowering trees, vines and perennials, to shade loving perennials and ground covers.
A unique rooftop garden on Bleecker Street in the heart of Greenwich Village with wonderful views and a beautiful variety of flowering shrubs, vines, annuals, and perennials. Roses, Clematis, Lantana, Lavender, Lonicera and Alyssum are just a few of the flowering plants that give this garden life throughout the seasons.
Trillium was hired to design and oversee the creation of this unique project in Ventnor City, NJ. Our client acquired the adjacent 6500 square foot property and our task was to create a lush garden on the beach. The site offered many environmental and ecological challenges as we transformed this sandy lot into a garden full of native plant material that will become a certified wildlife habitat full of birds and pollinators. The overall design was inspired by the movement of the koi fish in a small existing pond on the property and how the client will move through and experience the garden.
This rooftop design creates a lush outdoor room for entertaining friends and family in an otherwise unused space. Taking advantage of the awkward area at the rear of the garden caused by the large skylights, we created a platform bed to relax under a tree while being surrounded by the client’s favorite plants, specifically roses. The curved metal planting areas and contemporary furnishings create a sophisticated look against the soft massing of plant material.
This small terrace is an extension of a bedroom in a unique landmarked residence in Murry Hill. The outdoor room offers a space to relax, enjoy the dappled sunshine, or read a book in the cozy hammock chair. The plant material consists of three Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' selected for their small green leaves, upright form, and brilliant fall color. These trees provide scale, elegance, and year-round interest to the space. The Ilex hedge behind the couch screens the adjacent windows, while the classic white Hydrangeas complete the relaxing feel of the space. The annual boxes in the foreground are planted with white flowering diplodenia to accent the white hydrangea flowers, and strobilanthus for a beautiful purple accent.
A courtyard transformed from an empty and unused space to a lush shade garden with a unique goldfish pond. The pond was inspired by a shell’s natural form and the deconstruction of the existing bluestone patio. The plant material is a mix of native plants such as Hydrangea quercifolia, Ilex verticillata, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Onoclea sensibilis, and Carex pensylvanica mixed with non-native plant material including Camellias, Hostas, Hellebores, and Hedra helix. This garden offers year round interest, textures, flowers, berries, movement, and the tranquil sound of the gentle water fountain.
