GREENWICH VILLAGE TERRACE APLD GOLDEN AWARD - 2024 Small Gardens
Our client’s terrace located in Greenwich Village provided years of comfort and tranquility but over time the underlying membrane began to weaken, and an opportunity to transform the space emerged. Working with the client, we incorporated a new design for their 5th floor terrace. Our goal was to enhance the space for meditation and reflection using geometry as a way to create inclusion and unity. The creation of an oval meditation deck now serves as a dramatic area of focus, centering each visitor into the space. To enhance and frame the oval, we designed and installed a band of plantings to create privacy around the perimeter. Moving towards the south of the terrace, we opened the space leading the eye to the rear garden tree. In the open corner, we added a bubbling fountain among green roof plantings to soften the surrounding city soundscape with soothing white noise. Functionality is achieved with a dining space along the southeastern edge as it provides the needed flexibility for entertaining many guests at a time. Their new space, surrounded by a busy New York Metropolis, is open, inviting, soothing and multi-functional.
